Newham welcomes the Olympic Torch

On Sunday 6 April Newham will welcome the Olympic Torch on the streets of Stratford as part of the run up to the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games.

Newham welcomes the Olympic Torch at a free event in Stratford.

The flame will be lit in Olympia, Greece on March 24 and will then make its way around the world. In all it will visit 22 international cities, including London, and all five continents.

On 6 April, starting in Meridian Square at around 4pm, Stratford, seven torch bearers will take it in turns to carry the flame around the one-way system to Stratford station. It will then be taken to the Greenwich Dome for a spectacular finale, including the lighting of a cauldron.

Spectacular Aerial Performances

Carnival/Street Performers
A world-themed carnival following the progress of the torch through Newham with 300 school children, 50 spectacular carnival costumes and six music floats.

Sports Demos
Basketball, handball, fencing and cheerleading demos. Come along and have a go at cycling, canoeing and rowing.
