More attention needed to 2012 legacy say London's Olympic host boroughs

15/12/2007
Local people must have a say in the long term future of the London 2012 Games, east London councils have told a committee of MPs today.

The five London host boroughs of Greenwich, Hackney, Newham, Tower Hamlets and Waltham Forest were presenting evidence to a Government Select Committee on preparations for the Olympic and Paralympic Games in 2012.

They are calling for a genuine partnership with Olympic organisers on legacy issues and firm financial commitment to ensure that the Olympic Park venues are viable after the Games.

Mayor of Newham Sir Robin Wales, who led presentation of the evidence on behalf of the five boroughs, says:

"We all want the Games to be a success and show the world how great our capital city is. There is still a very high level of enthusiasm for the 2012 Games among local people and this is a great opportunity to revitalise sport and inspire communities.

"We are working hard with partners to ensure this world event will make a difference to residents' lives. We are very encouraged by the progress in developing the Olympic Park site and welcome participation in the key forum to develop legacy, attended by the Olympics Minister and the Mayor of London.

"Decisions that are being made now will have far-reaching impact on local people once the crowds are long gone. We will have to live with the venues for years to come so it is vital that we are involved.

"It is important that local communities have a strong voice and that there is an appropriate budget to honour the original Games commitments to deliver the best ever legacy."

The five host boroughs are calling for:

  • The closest possible involvement in decision making where it has a direct bearing upon legacy
  • Commitment to an appropriate sum to transform the Olympic Park
  • Clear business plans to ensure that the Olympic Park and individual venues are accessible and affordable to local people and sports groups post 2012
  • More projects like Newham Sports Academy to help talented sports individuals break the barriers of low income and inadequate support
  • Adequate funding to meet the extra demands that the Games will put on council services.

Planning applications for the detailed design of the Aquatic Centre and the main stadium are expected in the next few months.
