Judo talent try-outs for visually-impaired residents

12/05/2008
On Tuesday 10 June, The Newham Sports Academy with Tessa Sanderson held its VI Judo Talent ID Day for visually impaired people of all ages.
The event was held at Newham Leisure Centre in association with the British Judo Association (BJA) and the GLL. Over thirty participants attended on the day from across London, with 50% coming from Newham.

Demonstrations of typical judo lessons and of more advanced skills were given before participants tried out different exercises and techniques themselves. There were a number of talent spotters there on the day from organisations such as the Newham Sports Academy, British Disability Judo Team, BJA, and the British Paralympic Team.

Newham's Sports Academy is committed to searching for talented individuals in the borough, and used the day as an opportunity to boost the number of disabled athletes in the Academy in preparation for the 2012 Games. Paul Archer, whose son Liam took part on the day said, 'We really enjoyed the event, in particular the demonstrations the coaches did as it's hard for the kids to visualise what to do. We'd definitely go to an event like this again. I think there are more and more sporting events being put on locally to do with the Olympic and Paralympics Games and that's really good.'
