The London 2012 Games has been a spur to get even more
people involved in sport and healthy lifestyles. The council and
partners have already driven up participation through a number of
projects:
- We were the first London borough to introduce free swimming for
young people during school holidays. We provided 58,000 free swims
in 2004 - 40% from traditionally low participating groups
- 64,000 young people took part in 26 sports as part of our
Olympic Summer of Sport
- Our Asians in football programme is expanding at three
clubs
- The number of sports clubs has increased from 138 to 210 in
less than two years.
- The number of sports coaches has quadrupled
- We have set up 40 after school clubs
If young people won't come to us, we go to them. There have been
over 16,000 attendances in our Estate Based Sports scheme, which
offers six sports free of charge in local communities. Two thousand
young people take part in our estate-based football programme
alone.
The coming months will see a range of new sporting facilities
opening around the borough. |
