Sports Academy

05/11/2007
Newham Sport Academy is up and running Newham's dream for the London 2012 Olympic Games and Paralympic Games is to see local athletes competing and even winning medals.
Newham Sports Academy, launched in October 2006, is giving local 11-19 year olds who show top sporting talent the support they need to become an Olympic contender.

Following an extensive search throughout the borough by Tessa Sanderson CBE and her team of elite coaches, including Tony Jarrett, Clarence Callendar and Julian Golding, up to 50 for talented young people have the chance to make their dreams of sporting success a reality.

Academy members benefit from:

  • an individually tailored package of training, mentoring and advice
  • free access to local fitness and leisure facilities;
  • elite-level coaching from the Academy's coaches;
  • grants towards travel and equipment costs;
  • sports science advice on diet and technique
  • physiotherapy and massage to help avoid injury

The search is still on for the potential stars of 2012 as there are some places left. Look at Q&A to find out more.
